BOCA RATON — A five-run fifth inning doomed FAU on Sunday afternoon, leading to Toledo a 6-4 win and the end of the Owls’ five-game winning streak.

Entering the fifth with a 3-1 lead over the previously one-win Rockets, Nick Swan allowed two runs – only one of which was earned – before getting two outs and departing with the bases loaded. Mark Nowatnick’s first pitch was driven down the left field line by Toledo designated hitter AJ Montoya, who cleared the bases and gave the Rockets a 6-3 lead.

FAU had scored three in the bottom of the fourth, tying things at 1-1 when Sean Labsan hit a sacrifice fly to bring Esteban Puerta home. Gary Mattis gave the Owls a lead by forcing an errant throw from Toledo catcher Michael Ryan on a steal of second base; the error allowed David Miranda to score the team’s second run.

Austin Langham drove Mattis in with a fielder’s choice to make it a 3-1 game.

FAU had a chance to take the game back in the sixth inning when Kevin Abraham singled Labsan home, but the Owls would go hitless against Toledo’s Michael Jacob, who recorded the final eight outs.

Key Stat: 6 – Despite six walks, FAU’s offense couldn’t take the lead and erase the six runs and six hits that Nick Swan allowed on the mound.

Up Next: FAU will host Rutgers on Tuesday night in the final game before Conference USA play begins (though it is not the final non-conference game). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. The Owls and Scarlett Knights were originally scheduled to play on Wednesday, too, but that game has been cancelled.
