Magnificent Seven

Record-breaking running back Devin Singletary and three players who paved the way for him are among seven FAU players named All-Conference USA on Tuesday.

Singletary leads the nation with 30 total touchdowns, 29 of which came on the ground – tying a C-USA record.

A sophomore, Singletary heads into the Owls’ Boca Raton Bowl game against Akron with 1,796 rushing yards, averaging 6.5 yards per carry.

Junior left tackle Reggie Bain, senior left guard Roman Fernandez and senior center Antonyo Woods also earned All-Conference honors on the offensive side of the ball.

Along with right guard Jakobi Smith and right tackle Brandon Walton, FAU started the same five players along the offensive line in every game this season. That accomplishment comes one season after injuries forced FAU to use eight different offensive line combinations in the Owls’ first eight games of 2016.

Three FAU defensive players, led by linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, also earned All-Conference USA honors. The junior linebacker paced the conference with 134 tackles despite missing one game with an injury.

Safety Jalen Young, tied for the national lead in interceptions with seven and third among the Owls with 70 tackles, joins Al-Shaair, as does cornerback Shelton Lewis, who picked off four passes.

Sophomore tight end Harrison Bryant earned second-team C-USA honors. Bryant caught 32 passes for for 408 yards and a team-high five touchdowns despite missing the final two games with an ankle injury.

Wide receiver Willie Wright, who caught 49 passes for 586 yards – both of which led FAU – and defensive end Leighton McCarthy, who counted four sacks among his 49 tackles, were both named the C-USA All-Freshman team

Conference USA coaches vote on the All-Conference teams. FAU’s seven selections to the first team led the conference. The conference will announce its offensive and defensive players of the year on Wednesday.

The Owls claimed their first Conference USA title on Saturday with a 41-17 victory over North Texas.

FAU will conclude its season with the Dec. 19 Boca Raton Bowl appearance.
