Two Taggarts

BOCA RATON – Willie Taggart Jr. will play for his father.

The Tallahassee-University quarterback announced via Twitter that he has committed to Florida Atlantic. The Owls named Taggart Sr. their coach in December.

“Proud to say I’m committed to my next four years @FAU_Football #GoOwls,” Taggart Jr. wrote in his tweet.

Taggart Jr. reportedly held offers from Arkansas, Appalachian St. and Florida State – his father’s previous coaching stop. He attended Taggart’s introductory press conference at FAU in December.

Starting FAU quarterback Chris Robison, an All-Conference USA selection following the 2019 season, still has two years of eligibility remaining. Backup Nick Tronti, who played frequently in 2019 as part of run-first packages, also has two more years remaining. Justin Agner began 2019 as the second string quarterback but was limited by what coaches called a persistent illness. He is expected to return next season.

And Javion Posey, who moved to wide receiver during his true freshman season but was constantly called the quarterback of the future by then-coach Lane Kiffin, still has four more years of eligibility.

Cordell Littlejohn, who also moved from quarterback to wide receiver on a trial basis this season, said his position switch is permanent.

Despite a glut at the position, Taggart said at the start of December’s early signing period that his first FAU recruiting class would contain a quarterback.

The 6-foot, 160-pound Taggart Jr. is considered more of an athlete than a quarterback by some recruiting services, so it’s not out of the question that he could switch positions during his college career.

FAU attempted to sign a quarterback in December but Southfield (Mich.) signal caller Anthony Romphf, who committed to the Owls while Kiffin was still coach, signed with Purdue instead.
