BOCA RATON – The deal isn’t complete yet but Willie Taggart is the top candidate for the vacant FAU football coaching position and a deal appears close, a source with deep knowledge of the search told OwlAccess.com.

Fired from Florida St. mid-season, Taggart would be replacing Lane Kiffin, who left FAU for Mississippi following Saturday’s victory over UAB in the Conference USA Championship game.

Taggart fits the candidate profile provided to OwlAccess.com earlier this week. He would bring an offensive background to the job and has major-program experience.

Hired by Florida St. in December of 2017, Taggart joined the Seminoles after one season at Oregon.

Prior to that he revived South Florida’s program, spending four seasons as the Bulls coach and won 10 games in 2016.

Taggart is also familiar with Conference USA, having been the coach at Western Kentucky prior to the Hilltoppers move from the Sun Belt to C-USA. Current C-USA members FAU, FIU and Middle Tennessee played in the Sun Belt at that time.

Regarded as a strong recruiter, particularly within Florida, Taggart owns a 56-62 record as a head coach.
