BOCA RATON – Devin Singletary’s superlative sophomore season culminated with the FAU running back being named the Conference USA Most Valuable Player, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Singletary set numerous records this season. His 29 rushing touchdowns ties the Conference USA record held by his current position coach, Kevin Smith. With 1,796 rushing yards, Singletary easily shattered FAU’s single-season rushing record.
In Saturday’s C-USA title game, a 41-17 FAU win over North Texas, Singletary rushing for 164 yards an three touchdowns. With one game remaining, it’s extremely unlikely that Singletary will finish the season any lower than is No. 4 rank nationally in rushing.
He’s the second FAU player in as many seasons to earn one of the main C-USA football awards. Last season the conference honored defensive end Trey Hendrickson as its Defensive Player of the Year. Hendrickson now plays for the New Orleans Saints.

One of eight nominees for national coach of the year, Lane Kiffin lost out on the C-USA version of the award to UAB’s Bill Clark.
Kiffin led FAU to a perfect run through Conference USA play in his first season, but the voters preferred the accomplishments of Clark, who guided a UAB program that suspended it’s football program for two seasons to an 8-4 record and a Bahamas Bowl bid.
Like Kiffin, Clark is also a finalist for national coach of the year. Kiffin seemed to support the choice of Clark.
On Tuesday Kiffin tweeted “I vote for Coach Clark!!! Unreal job this year.”
Kiffin and the Owls are bowl bound for the first time since 2008. FAU will play Akron in the Dec. 19 Boca Raton Bowl.
