BOCA RATON – Kerrith Whyte will officially graduate from FAU on Friday but he won’t be attending the long-awaited ceremony.
Instead, he’ll be in Chicago taking the next step in one of the higher profile first-job-out-of-school careers.
“I’m fine with that,” Whyte said. “It’s a good cause.”
The Chicago Bears drafted Whyte in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft over the weekend. The Bears hold their rookie minicamp this weekend, and Whyte departs for the City of Broad Bratwursts on Thursday.
A running back with elite speed and good hands, Whyte elected to forego his final year of eligibility to enter the draft.
“I wouldn’t say it validates my decision. The work is just getting started. Getting drafted is only part of it,” Whyte said. “Getting drafted is nice, but you’ve still got to make the team.”
Never in program history had an FAU player declared early or the draft until Whyte, running back Devin Singletary and wide receiver Jovon Durante all did so this year. Buffalo selected Singletary in the third round on Friday.
Durante was one of 30 underclassmen, and one of four players invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, who didn’t get selected.
Seattle invited the Owls’ leader in receptions and receiving yards last season to a tryout during its upcoming rooking minicamp.
Nickel Herb Miller is the latest in a trio of Owls heading to Kansas City’s minicamp, joining cornerback Shelton Lewis and safety Andrew Soroh. All three head to Kansas City on a tryout.
Former defensive tackle Hunter Snyder received a tryout offer from San Francisco on Saturday. One ay later he accepting the invitation. He’ll be joining another former Owl, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, who signed a free agent deal shortly after the draft concluded.
In San Francisco Snyder and Al-Shaair will be reuniting with 2017 FAU defensive coordinator Chris Kiffin, the brother of current Owls’ coach Lane Kiffin.
Former left tackle Reggie Bain will tryout at center and guard for Washington, and potentially a couple of other teams, at their minicamps over the next couple weeks.
Safety Jalen Young says he is weighing multiple offers with his agent and hopes to reach a decision soon.
