BOCA RATON – John Franklin knows what trait will get him to the NFL and he hopes to flaunt it on Wednesday.
“You can teach somebody to catch, you can teach somebody to run routes, but you can’t teach somebody to be God-given fast,” Franklin said.
The former FAU wide receiver traveled to Indianapolis on Tuesday to take part in the BSN National Scouting Combine – a showcase held in the same city and at the same time as the NFL’s Scouting Combine but not affiliated with the league.
Franklin made noise this week past week when a video proclaiming that he ran a 4.19 40-yard dash worked its way through the internet. He had previously been clocked at 4.25 in the 40 at Auburn.
“I’m not making it bigger than what it is,” Franklin said. “I’ve been fast all my life.”
Franklin began his career as a quarterback at Florida St. before transferring to East Mississippi Community College, where he starred in the Netflix docu-series Last Chance U. He moved on to Auburn, switching from quarterback to wide receiver after losing a quarterback battle.
This past summer Franklin transferred to FAU as a graduate student. He caught seven passes for 95 yards and a touchdown in his lone season as an Owl. He also gained 229 yards and scored twice on 16 carries.
Franklin will participate in all the combine events, including running his 40-yard dash at the BSN combine on Wednesday morning. Regardless of how he does, Franklin says he intends to take part in FAU’s March 27 Pro Day.
