The unlikeliest odyssey from FAU to the NFL took another leap forward on Saturday when defensive back Tevin Homer signed with the Washington Redskins.
Homer attended the Redskins rookie minicamp this weekend and says the Redskins offered him a contract, which he signed.
The offer, Homer said, didn’t come as a surprise.
“Not really because I knew I was doing good,” Homer said.
The signing will surprise many who watched Homer at FAU. He played in only eight games as a senior, recording two tackles. Homer primarily contributed on special teams as an Owl.
“I’m definitely going to be playing all the special teams,” said Homer, who will primarily work as a cornerback on defense for the Redskins.
Interest in Homer picked up after his participation in two collegiate all-star games the Tropical Bowl and the FCS Bowl.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Homer began his college career at Arkansas Baptist. He transferred to FAU for the final two seasons of his career.
Homer is the third member of FAU’s 2017 graduating class to join an NFL team. New Orleans selected defensive end Trey Hendrickson in the third round of the recent NFL Draft. Hendrickson and the Saints have yet to agree on a contract.
Offensive lineman Dillon DeBoer says he signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Chargers following the draft.
Two other former FAU players, Shalom Ogbonda and Tyler Cameron, received invites to the New York Jets’ and Baltimore Ravens’ minicamps, respectively.
