BOCA RATON – By the time the season ends, FAU coach Lane Kiffin will be owed some extra money.
FAU, however, doesn’t seem to know how much.
Kiffen’s employment contract, signed on December 13, 2016 and obtained by OwlAccess.com through a freedom of information request, list several bonus lines he has either already secured or has a chance to achieve in the coming weeks.
The amount listed across the page from most of the bonus line items reads TBD. If the contract has been update since Kiffin’s hiring, FAU doesn’t seem the be able to locate it. Responding to requests for an updated contract with the specific bonus payouts, FAU informed OwlAccess.com that the contract signed back in December is the most recent one.
Kiffin already has two bonuses coming to him, one for leading the Owls to Saturday’s Conference USA championship game against North Texas, the other for clinching a bowl berth. He’ll receive an additional bonus should he win the C-USA title on Saturday against North Texas and a second one if FAU concludes the season ranked among the Top 25 in the coaches’ poll. The Owls are currently receiving votes in that poll.
The contract reads that Kiffin needs to coach in the C-USA championship game to receive those pertinent bonuses and the bowl game to receive the bonuses pertaining to those games.
According to the contract of Charlie Partridge, the coach who preceded Kiffin at FAU, Partridge would have received $30,000 had he won the C-USA title and led the Owls to a bowl game.
Should Kiffin be named Conference USA’s coach of the year, a real probability should the Owls claim the title on Saturday, he would receive an additional $7,500 – the same amount Partridge would have received.
Kiffin’s assistants will also be rewarded financially. Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles and defensive coordinator Chris Kiffin have already earned $2,500 bonuses for winning C-USA’s East Division outright. That payout doubles to $5,000 if the Owls win on Saturday.
Position coaches have already clinched a $1,000 bonus for the outright winning of the East. With a win on Saturday, the bonus jumps to $2,500.
Briles, the only assistant whose contract is limited to one year, also has a clause in his contract that allows him to share in any net revenue that comes to FAU from their appearance in a bowl game. That sum will be determined by FAU athletic director Pat Chun, with input from Lane Kiffin.
