Uninspired

Yet another poor shooting night kept FAU from improving its standing for next week’s Conference USA basketball tournament and led to a 79-59 loss at UAB.

The loss, combined with Charlotte’s victory over UTSA drops FAU into a tie with Southern Miss for the C-USA tournament’s final qualifying spots. Only the top 12 teams qualify for the C-USA tournament. FAU entered Thursday’s game against the Blazers having already secured a spot in the field.

With a win over C-USA leader MTSU in Saturday’s season finale, FAU could still mathematically climb into a three-way tie for the No. 9 seed with UTSA and Charlotte, which beat the Roadrunners at the buzzer on Saturday to make the math more complex. Add a Southern Miss win on Saturday to that scenario and it becomes a four-way tie for the No. 9 seed.

A loss in the Owls season finale combined with a win by Southern Miss could drop FAU to the No. 12 seed.

FAU fell behind early against UAB, managing only four points over the first 6 minutes of play. The Owls trailed 42-33 at halftime and only shot 34 percent for the game.

Adonis Filer led the Owls with 15 points.

GameBrowser: UAB (16-14, 9-8) 79, FAU (10-17, 6-10) 59

Moving Forward: Center Ronald Delph came off the bench to score 12 points and grab six rebounds. …Nick Rutherford scored nine points and doled out five assists. …FAU play-by-play broadcaster Ken LaVicka made a fine snag of an errant pass that threatened to wipe out the scorer’s table.

Moving Backward: Center William Pfister didn’t foul out – in fact he didn’t do much of anything. He didn’t score and grabbed only two rebounds. …FAU launched 24 three-pointers and made only six. …UAB out-rebounded FAU 30-15. That’s all about effort – or lack there of.

Key Stat: 28 – points scored by FAU’s starting lineup combined. Filer and Delph came off the bench to score 27. Isn’t it time to get Delph and Filer back into the starting lineup?

Up Next: FAU concludes its regular season with a trip to C-USA leader Middle Tennessee.
