FAU ADDS ANOTHER WEAPON ON DEFENSE

One of the most exciting players from the 2024 recruiting class is Remington Roberts out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Roberts is a safety and linebacker standing at six feet and two inches. He weighs 192 pounds, and some critics believe that he will need to put on more muscle to reach his full potential at the linebacker position.

During his highschool career, Roberts recorded 35 tackles, 5 sacks, 22 yards for loss and 2 interceptions for 33 yards. These are fairly competitive stats for a player that has transitioned between highschools.

I think this was a great addition by Head Coach Tom Herman and the FAU Owls. With Roberts’ stats it was easy for him to fall under the radar during recruitment and he only received four offers, but Herman saw something that the others did not.

It is important to note that Roberts was also a competitor on his high school’s track team, where he contributed to multiple top-three finishes in the 4×100 relay race. If Coach Herman decides to play Roberts as a safety, his speed and experience from track will make his side of the field a no-flight zone for deep threat wide receivers. If Coach Herman decides he wants Roberts to play linebacker, he will be one of the faster linebackers in the conference. Also, the absence of track and field training in college will make it easier for Roberts to put on more weight.

I think this is a steal of a signing by the Owls because of Roberts’ high ceiling and all-around athletic ability. Regardless of position, Head Athletic Trainer Bill Sanders is going to have a field day with Roberts and turn him into an animal. I could easily see Roberts weighing in at 215 pounds by the end of his freshman year and being comparable to TJ Watt.

Overall, only time will tell what the future holds for Roberts, but with two highly competitive safeties in Michael Wright III and Curtis Janvier, it is likely that he will be utilized as a linebacker.

As an Owls football fan, be ready to watch the progression of Roberts and don’t be shocked when you see him celebrating a sack before the quarterback even realizes the play had begun.
