BOCA RATON – FAU basketball will head to the state of Texas on Wednesday for a two-game weekend swing without two players suspended indefinitely by coach Michael Curry.
Guard Je’Quan Perry and forward Tre’ Maloney are not expected to rejoin the Owls this season.
Junior college transfers, Perry and Maloney both complained about a lack of playing time but weren’t expected to receive more of it.
Losing Perry will have more of an effect than losing Maloney. Perry, from Spartanburg Methodist College, played in 12 of the Owls’ first 14 games this season, averaging two points and 9.5 minutes per game.
Maloney, a sophomore from Georgia Highlands College, only played in six games, scoring a total of four points.
The suspension occurred on Friday, prior to the Owls’ 61-57 Saturday loss to Middle Tennessee.
After going 6-6 in non-conference play, which included three wins over NAIA teams, the Owls (6-9, 0-3 C-USA) enter their fourth Conference USA game still searching for their first C-USA win. They are the lone winless team in C-USA play.
FAU faces UTEP (6-10, 1-3 C-USA) on Thursday, then Texas-San Antonio (9-8, 2-2 C-USA) on Saturday.
Perry’s playing time increased in the latter part of the non-conference slate when an ankle sprain forced Payton Hulsey to miss three games, including the C-USA opener at FIU.
Hulsey returned for Thursday’s 75-44 loss to UAB. Perry did not see the floor in that game. Maloney hadn’t seen game action since FAU’s 95-60 loss at Minnesota on Dec. 23.
After coming off the bench all season, Hulsey moved into the starting lineup in Saturday’s MTSU loss, scoring four points and doling out five assists.
Justin Massey also started that game, replacing Gerdarius Troutman at shooting guard.
Hulsey and Massey are expected to remain in the starting lineup for the foreseeable future.
