BOCA RATON — FAU’s defense made sure the Shula Bowl trophy stayed within reach, then delivered the stops needed to bring it back to Boca Raton.
The Owls defeated FIU 16–10 at Flagler Credit Union Stadium, surviving three fourth-quarter threats to improve to 2–1.
A week after winning behind five touchdown passes against Navy, Florida Atlantic leaned on takeaways and red-zone defense. Jonathan Bax, Chris Tooley III and Bo Simpson-Nealy each intercepted a pass in the first quarter, helping FAU establish control early.
Tooley’s 47-yard interception return set up Leonard Farrow’s four-yard touchdown run. Collin Rogers added a field goal, and the Owls carried a 10–7 lead into halftime. Two more Rogers field goals in the third quarter pushed the advantage to 16–7 before FIU answered with a fourth-quarter kick.
The Panthers repeatedly threatened to erase the remaining six-point deficit. Damarius McGhee broke up a fourth-down pass near the goal line, and Jay Crable later supplied a fourth-down sack around midfield.
After FAU’s offense failed to put the game away, Reed Chandley’s punt was downed at the FIU 1-yard line by Nate Fischer. The Panthers still drove into the red zone, but their final pass into the end zone fell incomplete as time expired.
FIU finished with a 357–260 advantage in total offense. Caden Veltkamp completed 25 of 37 passes for 204 yards without an interception, according to the official box score.
Tooley earned FAU’s Shula Bowl MVP honor after recording five tackles, an interception, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble.
The Owls won through timely defense, protecting a narrow lead when their offense could not create separation.
