BOCA RATON – Unheralded during the recruiting process, tight end Harrison Bryant may well become the first member of FAU’s 2016 signing class to see game action.
“He’s catching the ball well,” Partridge said. “He’s tenacious in his blocking. He’s learning techniques and all those kinds of things. He’s a fast learner. He’s a very eager young man.”
While Bryant is clearly playing well, he likely wouldn’t have received such an early opportunity if not for another injury that is affecting the Owls’ two-deep.
Second-string tight end Dustin Bowens, considered the best blocking tight end on the Owls, is expected to miss the first couple of games with a chest injury, FAU coach Charlie Partridge said.
On Thursday Partridge chose a glass-half-full approach, saying he’s “excited that we’ll get him back fairly early in the season.”
A three-sport athlete out of Georgia’s John Milledge Academy, FAU was the highest profile program to offer a scholarship.
Ten of Bryant’s 39 catches as a high school senior went for touchdowns. Listed at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, he’s become a frequent target from FAU quarterbacks this week while serving as starter Tyler Cameron’s backup.
“He’s had a really nice fall camp,” Partridge said following the Owls’ second practice of the day – the first of four two-a-day practices FAU will hold during camp.
Bowens’ absence also increases the likelihood that another freshman tight end, John Raine, could also see early action.
