BOCA RATON – FAU is targeting April 18 for this year’s spring football game, OwlAccess.com has learned.
The anticipated game will mark the debut of new coach Willie Taggart in a game-style coaching situation.
The Owls are expected to announce a finalized date and announce the full spring schedule in the coming days.
The NCAA affords schools 15 practices during the spring in a period that can last no longer than five weeks. The spring game counts as one of those practices.
While the Owls have not announced a date for the first practice, should Taggart follow the same scheduling used in past years at FAU the Owls will first take the field under him during the week beginning March 16.
In past seasons FAU practiced three times per week during the spring, with at least one off day in between each practice.
Taggart replaced Lane Kiffin as the Owls’ coach in December. Kiffin led FAU to two 11-win seasons and two Conference USA titles in a three-year span before accepting the head position at Mississippi.
Florida St. fired Taggart in 2019, midway through his second season.
FAU recently announced its first recruiting class under Taggart, one ranked by some recruiting services as the best in Conference USA.
