BOCA RATON – That Buddy Howell is impressing the Miami Dolphins doesn’t come as a surprise to his former coach, Lane Kiffin.
The Owls’ coach praised Howell’s work ethic and unselfishness on Thursday between sessions of the Adidas football camp held at FAU.
“We’ve got a lot of examples but he’s probably better than anybody – a guy that obviously had aspiration in the NFL but look, if you just do the right things even if you don’t have as many carries as you like, the way that he played when he did get in there is why he’s in the NFL right now,” Kiffin said.
Howell, the fourth leading rusher in program history, signed with Miami as a free agent following May’s NFL Draft.
He’s likely fourth on the Dolphins depth chart at running back, but is making his mark as a special teams player.
Miami special teams coach Darren Rizzi praised Howell’s performance earlier this week.
When it became clear that Devin Singletary would be the Owls’ lead back in 2017, Kiffin began employing Howell on special teams.
During the Dolphins initial rookie mini-camp Howell credited the move to special teams with preparing him for an NFL opportunity.
“We put him in a special teams role even though he was a top back,” Kiffin said, “I hope that that helped.”
