BOCA RATON – FAU’s second spring practice concluded with a surprise.
New coach Lane Kiffin didn’t tell anyone what the final team portion of the scrimmage would entail.
He grabbed the ball, placed it at the 10 yard line, and gave the first-team offense four plays to score against the first-team defense. He did the same with the twos.
“I just try to do things that they don’t know are coming,” Kiffin said. “The coaches don’t either, so they have to adjust. Both coordinators have to make calls that aren’t on the scripts, aren’t on the plans. It usually creates a competitive situation with guys kind of getting into it, which is what the game’s like, so we see how the guys adjust when the schedule changes.”
Overall, Kiffin said he was pleased with the Owls on Thursday, though he’d like to see better snaps and fewer turnovers from the offense.
“I thought the guys had really good energy,” Kiffin said.
FAU returns to the practice field at noon on Saturday. FAU’s spring game is on April 22 at 4 p.m.
