BOCA RATON – Lane Kiffin has hired Southern Miss defensive coordinator Tony Pecoraro to be FAU’s new defensive coordinator, OwlAccess.com has confirmed.
Pecoraro spent the past two seasons at Southern Miss. Last year the Golden Eagles boasted the No. 20 unit in total defense, allowing an average of only 331.9 yards per game. Southern Miss ranked No. 45 in scoring defense by surrendering 24.5 points per game.
Despite FAU fielding a much improved defense last season, Southern Miss was better in both categories.
FAU and Southern Miss are both members of Conference USA, but the Owls and Golden Eagles did not play each other last season.
Pecoraro replaces Chris Kiffin, brother of Lane Kiffin, who left the Owls in February to join the San Francisco 49ers staff.
He will also coach the linebackers.
Prior to his two seasons at Southern Miss Pecoraro spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Alcorn St. He also served as a quality control assistant at Florida St.
FAU begins its spring practice on March 20.
