BOCA RATON – FAU has its quarterback for the 2019 Signing Class. He’s actually been an Owl longer than most realize.
Greenville (Ala.) dual threat Javion Posey signed with the Owls late on the first day of the early signing period, but kept the news quiet for more than a month so that he could announce it on National Signing Day.
“I knew it as going to come out on Signing Day,” Posey said.
Posey threw for more than 2,000 passing yards and added another 500 on the ground, accounting for 41 total touchdowns as a senior.
“He’s got a very strong arm, throws the deep ball very well,” ” Greenville coach Josh McClendon said. “Obviously can scramble and make some plays that are not always there.”
Originally a Western Kentucky commit prior to the Hilltoppers coaching change, Posey visited FAU during the final weekend before the early signing period. His signing prompted the Owls to move on from Palm Beach Gardens-Dwyer signal caller Gio Richardson, who ultimately committed to Tennessee-Chattanooga.
“That made me feel kind of special knowing that they were through looking for quarterbacks once they sealed the deal with me,” Posey said.
Georgia St., Troy and South Alabama all showed interest in Posey, and more offers were expected once it became known that Posey re-entered the market following his de-committment from WKU. FAU signed Posey before other schools could swoop in.
Posey’s signing fills a position of need for the Owls. Returning starter Chris Robison, a rising redshirt sophomore, flashed brilliance but also disappointed at times throughout his first season. Despite being named Conference USA’s Co-Offensive Newcomer of the Year Robison is no lock to keep hold of the job
Indiana transfer Nick Tronti, a former Florida Mr. Football, will have a chance to unseat Robison, but his collegiate game action is limited to two late-game handoffs. FAU is also trying to develop Cordel Littlejohn, a signee in last year’s class.
“They told me I’d be able to compete right away,” Posey said.
Reserve De’Andre Johnson, formerly of Florida St. and “Last Chance U” fame, announced his decision in December to transfer from FAU. Johnson surged late in the season as a change-of-pace quarterback for the Owls.
Posey said the ability to learn under noted quarterback developer Lane Kiffin is a major reason he signed with the Owls.
“It payed a role in it, knowing his background and what’s he’s been able to do – especially at the quarterback position,” Posey said.
