BOCA RATON – Jovon Burriss will not be coming to FAU, and this time that appears to be the final answer.

A defensive back out of Fullerton College, Burriss signed with FAU as part of its 2017 signing class – the Owls’ first under Lane Kiffin. However, Burriss needed to complete some coursework and didn’t arrive in time for the season.

In December Burriss thought he had completed the necessary requirements, but he said FAU admissions took issue with the way he withdrew from a class earlier in his junior college career, affecting his GPA and therefore his eligibility for admission.

“I took it as, if there was another option they would have told me,” Burriss said.

A couple of weeks ago Burriss thought he’d spend this weekend moving to FAU. Now he’s looking for another school.

“I opened my recruiting back up and I’ve been talking to schools I didn’t think I’d be talking to,” Burriss said.

Burriss has an official visit scheduled at Buffalo and has heard from Texas A&M and Tennessee. Another team that recently joined the mix? Hawaii.

Former FAU defensive backs coach Corey Batoon recently accepted the Rainbows’ defensive coordinator position. Burriss said he wasn’t aware that Batoon had left FAU for Hawaii and that the contact from the Rainbows came while the team was still in the process of hiring its defensive coordinator.

Burriss and linebacker Carson Lydon were the two players who signed with FAU in 2017 but were expected in Boca Raton for the spring. There is no indication that Lydon won’t arrive for the spring semester.

One of the five players FAU signed in December is also heading to campus this weekend. Defensive tackle Charles Cameron from Copiah-Lincoln CC told OwlAccess.com on Thursday that he was planning to move in on Friday.

College of the Canyons wide receiver Desean Holmes had hoped to finish his academic requirements in time to participate in spring football, but he says FAU informed him this week that he’ll be coming to Boca Raton in May.

Fellow wide receiver Nero Nelson, a teammate of Cameron’s at Copiah-Lincoln, signed in December with a target arrival date of May. The Owls two other signees, Orlando-Jones defensive end Delvin Hayes and Winter Garden-West Orange defensive end Franklin “Tre” Jackson, will complete their final high school semesters before heading to FAU this summer.
