Good Not Great

BOCA RATON – Conference USA voters didn’t find the performances of cornerback Meiko Dotson or linebacker Keke Leroy strong enough to merit Player of the Week honors.

Dotson, who intercepted two passes in FAU’s victory over MTSU on Saturday, fell short to Marshall defensive end Darius Hodge, who tied a team record with 4.5 sacks in a win over Old Dominion.

Hodge and Dotson will share the field on Friday when Marshall travels to FAU.

Keke Leroy almost single-handedly gave FAU it’s first points in Saturday’s 28-13 victory over Middle Tennessee.

Following MTSU’s first touchdown, Keke raced around the edge on the point after attempt, blocking the kick, then scooping the football and returning to the opposite end zone for two points.

“It’s fun but I have to give all the credit to the other guys” Leroy said following the game.

That effort, however, didn’t impress voters as much as UAB kicker Nick Vogel’s four field goals at UTSA.

Leroy on defense also added eight tackles in the game for the Owls.

The last time FAU scored a defensive two point conversion came in 2008 by Darian Thomas.

FAU VS. MARSHALL PREVIEW
Looking to keep a perfect conference record, FAU on Friday faces a Marshall squad attempting to stay in the hunt for the C-USA East title. The Thundering Herd enter the game at 1-1 in C-USA play, with their loss coming to MTSU, which FAU defeated on Saturday.

Marshall’s pass rush has been its strength defensively this season. Led by defensive end Darius Hodge, the Thundering Herd have 18 sacks in six games, second-most in Conference USA behind Charlotte and tied for No. 22 nationally.

The Thundering Herd’s rush defense, on the other hand, has struggled, allowing over 148 yards per game and surrendering nine touchdowns The Owls finally got their running game going, rolling to 439 yards in their past two games.

Marshall will attack FAU’s defense with running back Brenden Knox, who’s rushed for more than five yards per carry. Against MTSU two weeks ago, Marshall quarterback Isiah Green threw for more than 350 yards, but was picked off three times.
