BOCA RATON – Andrew Soroh began the season as a starting safety and will end the season as one.
From start to finish, the timeline hasn’t been as smooth as it might appear.
A redshirt junior, Soroh lost his starting spot to true freshman Zyon Gilbert early this season, only to reclaim it a few games later.
Soroh enters Tuesday’s Boca Raton Bowl against Akron playing some of the best football of his career.
“He’s finishing on a really high note,” FAU coach Lane Kiffin said. “For someone that wasn’t playing as much early, playing other guys over him, I think he kind of fits the theme of the team, much like (running back Buddy Howell), much like this team. They don’t complain. They just go to work.”
Soroh entered the season with 51 career tackles. He’s added 47 to that total this season while starting eight games and will likely likely add a few more during the Boca Bowl.
He intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble against reigning conference champion Western Kentucky as the Owls undefeated run through Conference USA play really gained momentum.
“I improved a lot,” Soroh said. “Took some opportunities. Got extra reps after practice, before practice. Continued to watch film. I just continued to get better.”
His teammates agree.
“He’s a great player,” fellow starting safety Jalen Young said. “His mindset – the way he thinks – he’s a very smart player, intelligent player. That helps him a lot on the field. These last games I’ve seen him take a big step and that’s just the way he approaches things. He’s in the film room more often. He’s really taken on a leadership role, one that obviously can carry on to next year.”
Even as they demoted Soroh from the starting unit, coaches still saw the value in his play.
In an effort to keep him more involved, the Owls worked him at linebacker for a few weeks – a spot where they lack depth.
An ankle injury sidelined Gilbert midway through the season, allowing Soroh to reclaim the starting free safety spot. He’s been there ever since.
“Being up and down, playing multiple positions, I feel like this is a very good season,” Soroh said. “I got to show some versatility. I feel like I really improved my game from last year to this year. So I feel like it’s been really good.”
