Happy at Home

BOCA RATON – There may be some FAU players who aren’t happy to be playing a bowl game in their home football stadium.

Running back Buddy Howell is not one of them.

“Honestly, I was just grateful,” Howell said of FAU’s Boca Raton Bowl invitation. “Being home, parents get to come. Everyone gets to come. I think it’s a plus. Stay local.”

Conference USA champions and winners of nine consecutive games, many who follow FAU hoped to be going away to a bowl game.

Instead, the Owls will play Akron on Dec. 19 at Howard Schnellenberger Field.

For Howell, a senior who graduated from Coral Gables High School, it will be his first bowl game and the final game of his college career.

“We weren’t here last year,” Howell said. “We weren’t here the year before that. We weren’t here my freshman year. So why wouldn’t I now be grateful to be in the Boca Bowl? I’m glad they picked us. I’m just happy to be here.”

Howell rushed for 2,369 yards and counting in his career, along with 22 touchdowns. He’ll conclude his FAU career in fourth place on FAU’s career rushing list.

The emergence of Devin Singletary, along with two games missed to injury, held Howell to 690 yards and five touchdowns as a senior. Despite the lower totals, he still averaged 6.7 yards per carry. Howell currently stands 10th on this year’s C-USA rushing list.

Limited by an ankle injury Howell didn’t play in the Conference USA championship game. He does expect to be ready for the Boca Raton Bowl.

“I should be good,” Howell said.
