BOCA RATON – Having Lane Kiffin as its football coach figured to bring some high profile visitors to FAU football practices, but one person at Tuesday’s practice took many by surprise.
Former Israeli surgeon general Yitshak Kreiss accompanied FAU president John Kelly to the sidelines to get a first hand look at the Owls.
On the sidelines, Kreiss struck up a conversation with former FAU defensive tackle and current New York Jet Brandon Bryant.
“I didn’t know who he was at first,” Bryant said. “President Kelly introduced us. It was a humbling experience to meet him. You don’t expect to meet someone like that – to cross paths with someone from across the world – at FAU’s spring practice.”
Kelly spent about 10 minutes speaking with Kiffin during the early moments of practice, but had to leave to meet with Kreiss, who is consulting with FAU about potentially starting an emergency treatment line of study within the Florida Atlantic medical school.
Former coach Howard Schnellenberger and former assistant Fred O’Connor were also on hand for the first practice of the Lane Kiffin Era, as was former FAU quarterback Quez Johnson.
The Owls return to the practice field on Thursday morning. FAU’s spring game is scheduled for April 22 at 4 p.m.
