BOCA RATON – FAU defensive tackle Ray Ellis is expected to miss the remainder of the season because of a knee injury suffered against Navy, coach Lane Kiffin said.
Ellis incurred a similar injury in fall camp last year to the same knee, forcing him to miss all of last season and spring practice.
“Unfortunately Ellis’ knee is pretty bad,” Kiffin said. “Anticipation would be that he would probably be out for the year.
Still working to regain strength in the knee, Ellis has worked his way onto the second string and was part of a five-man rotation at defensive tackle for the Owls.
“(Ellis) really battled his way back and really started to look really good as he looked healthier and healthier,” Kiffin said.
Ellis started five games in 2015 as a true freshman and recorded 24 tackles on the season.
The injury happened in the second quarter of FAU’s 42-19 season-opening loss to Navy on Friday. He did not have a tackle in that game.
Kiffin said Ellis is once again expected to need surgery.
“Tough deal on him and loss of a really good player,” Kiffin said.
