BOCA RATON – New FAU coach Lane Kiffin intends to hire UCF Quality Control Administrator Kevin Smith to be a member of the Owls’ offensive coaching staff, a source tells OwlAccess.com.
Smith enjoyed a prolific career as a running back at UCF before playing five years with the Detroit Lions. He is expected to coach the running backs at FAU.
Upon returning to UCF in 2015, Smith found himself in a little bit of trouble, getting arrested for allegedly refusing to sign a citation involving a traffic accident and resisting arrest by an officer without violence. The incident did not appear to prompt disciplinary action from the UCF administration.
Smith rushed for 2,567 yards and 30 touchdowns as a junior in 2007.
If Smith is in fact the Owls’ running backs coach, he’ll be heading a deep, talented unit. Buddy Howell set a program record by rushing for 13 touchdowns this past season. True freshman Devin Singletary was right behind him with 12 touchdowns, and he became the first FAU freshman to eclipse the 1,000 yard mark.
FAU will also add Georgia transfer A.J. Turman to the mix this spring. Kerrith Whyte has proven to be an effective change of pace back and pass catcher.
The hiring of Smith leaves only two more assistant coaching spots – one on offense and one on defense – for Kiffin to fill.
Smith will join offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, offensive line coach Garin Justice and Charlie Weis Jr. on the offensive side of the ball.
