BOCA RATON – FAU quarterback De’Andre Johnson is out of the hospital but his ability to return to the football field remains unclear, FAU coach Lane Kiffin said on Monday.
“He’s not practicing and it may be a long-term event,” Kiffin said.
Johnson entered the hospital on Sept. 7 to undergo surgery to remove blood clots in his arm, his father, Earl, posted on Facebook. He remained in the hospital through much of last week.
While it’s likely that Johnson will miss the remainder of the season, Kiffin remains hopeful that Johnson can return sooner.
“I do, but I always have hope,” Kiffin said.
Johnson began his career at Florida St. before transferring to East Mississippi C.C., where he was prominently featured in the Netflix docu-series Last Chance U.
An undisclosed arm injury limited Johnson throughout fall camp.
He played in the Owls’ season-opening loss to Navy, rushing four times for 31 yards and completing two of three passes for five yards. The third pass was intercepted.
