Conference USA media members selected FAU quarterback Jason Driskel as their Offensive Player of the Week.
A redshirt junior, Driskel enjoyed his best game since reclaiming the starting quarterback spot, throwing for 357 yards and two touchdowns in FAU’s 69-31 blowout of North Texas on Saturday. He also ran for 68 yards and another score.
Driskel needed less that three quarters to do all his damage. FAU played second and third stringers in the fourth quarter.
The Owls’ starting quarterback last season, Driskel began this year on the bench. He replaced redshirt sophomore Daniel Parr after the third game of the season, but the passing game continued to struggle.
This is the second consecutive time FAU nominated Driskel, doing so after he tied a program record by rushing for four touchdowns two weeks ago against Old Dominion. Driskel rushed for 92 yards in that game, however, only threw for 97 yards in that game, which Conference USA media members apparently held against him. They elected Southern Miss running back Ito Smith, who rushed for 178 yards and one touchdown, instead.
The bye week between the ODU and UNT games helped cure some of those passing deficiencies.
The Owls had been struggling to connect on downfield passes, but Driskel hit his first big play of the year during the first quarter of Saturday’s blowout, connecting on a 69-yard bomb to freshman wide receiver Willie Wright.
FAU posted victories in three of four Driskel starts and currently own their first three-game winning streak since 2013.
Driskel is the second FAU player to win the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week award. The conference named running back Devin Singletary its co-Offensive Player of the Week following his 133-yard, four touchdown performance against Middle Tennessee.
FAU is currently tied with Marshall for the lead of Conference USA’s East Division with a 3-0 record in conference. At 4-3, the Owls are above .500 overall this late in the season for the first time since 2007.
