BOCA RATON – De’Andre Johnson is spending more time on the football field of late, but FAU coach Lane Kiffin isn’t expecting to see him in a game this season.
Does Kiffin consider Johnson, who underwent surgery in September to remove blood clots from his arm, to be out for the season?
“I don’t know that,” Kiffin said. “They just tell me each week that he’s still out. I don’t know that. I’m just kind of assuming by the way they sound that he’s not coming back but I don’t know for sure.”
When Johnson signed with FAU in December he was widely expected to be the Owls’ starting quarterback.
The former Florida St. quarterback who gained nation fame as the signal caller for East Mississippi in the Netflix Docu-series “Last Chance U” performed well during the spring, but struggled through fall camp.
Daniel Parr won the starting quarterback job out of camp. Johnson played in the season’s first game but underwent surgery before the Owls’ second game.
Johnson has returned to FAU practices in recent weeks but is not participating in them. He was not on the field for the early portion of Tuesday morning’s practice, but Johnson was on the field prior to Friday’s victory over Marshall lightly tossing the football with fellow quarterback Chris Robison, who stood 15 yards away. Video of that game of catch can be seen above.
Jason Driskel has taken over for Parr as the Owls’ starting quarterback. While Driskel’s overall passing statistics haven’t wowed – except for the 357-yard, three touchdown performance against North Texas that won him Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors three weeks ago – the Owls won five of his six starts.
