BOCA RATON – FAU didn’t exactly make new coach Dusty May sweat out his first career victory.
FAU took a 20-point lead into halftime against Florida Tech in the season opener and the Owls never looked back on their way to a 98-52 victory.
“Overall, very pleased with our effort,” said May, who replaced Michael Curry as the Owls’ coach in March. “I thought we played hard. I thought we played unselfishly. In the second half I thought we got to our personality which is getting on the offensive glass, getting out running more, and I think our defensive intensity picked up.
One of only three returning players from last season’s team, Jailyn Ingram led all scorers with 21 points and all rebounders with 12. Xavian Stapleton missed a double-double by one board, scoring 13 points to go with his nine rebounds.
“This team has so many new guys and even the veterans are playing a new role,” May said. “Stapelton Ingram, they haven’t been a go-to guy before, they’ve just been a complimentary piece.”
Six FAU players achieved double digits in the scoring column. The victory is the first for the Owls in their season-opener since 2013. The Owls’ 98 points are the most in a season-opener.
“It was fun, just like practice is fun,” May said.
