He’s a player. He’s a Coach. Trent Wessel’s Unique On-The-Job Training

fau trent wessel

BOCA RATON – Watching Trent Wessel command the practice field, it’s easy to understand why Lane Kiffin thinks he’s mentoring a future coach.

Fourth – at best – out of five quarterbacks on the depth chart of Owls currently participating in fall camp, Wessel is nonetheless intricately involved in practice. He’ll signal plays. He’ll explain reads. He’ll teach the offense.

And every few turns, No. 19 correctly reads the defense and throws strikes to open receivers.

Wessel does want to coach. Eventually. But August isn’t the time to discuss that. More…

FAU Issues Lane Kiffin $2 Million Home Loan That He Might Not Have To Repay

BOCA RATON – A ticket on the Lane Train carries a significantly heftier cost than FAU initially admitted.

FAU’s total compensation package for football coach Lane Kiffin includes a previously unreported $2 million loan that he won’t need to repay should Kiffin remain at Florida Atlantic through 2021.

That loan is in addition to the five year, $4.75 million contract Kiffin signed in December of 2016 to become the fifth coach in program history.

“The intent was, let’s put a package together that Lane’s happy with and he’s comfortable with and something that we can afford,” FAU president Dr. John Kelly said. More…

Wainwright Throws Minor Leaguer a Gift with Car Rental

wainoapJUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Ryan Sherriff thought clubhouse prankster Adam Wainwright was taking him for a ride. Turns out, Sherriff was about to be given one.

When the Cardinals’ traveling secretary asked Sherriff for his driver’s license, the 26-year-old left-hander thought someone was trying to mock his photo, which still featured a picture from his high school days. More…

Big Rob On Campus

bigrobronalddelph1200BOCA RATON – At first glance he’s rather unremarkable – which is to say he fits into his surroundings.

At 6-foot-3 and 274 pounds, he probably would fit better in a football huddle than a lay-up line, but here he is in the minutes leading up to FAU’s Jan. 7 basketball game against FIU, mingling with players and assistant coaches on the court.

Sporting a conservative haircut that’s parted to the right – one that, a couple weeks later, would change into a modern, slicked back look – while dressed in khakis and a button down shirt he could, in fact, pass as an assistant coach. The new red adidas Ultra Boost basketball shoes on his feet, however, suggest he’s a manager or some other member of the basketball support staff. More…

Fits Like a Glove: Cardinals’ Mike Matheny Breaks In Leather

mathenyapJUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Mike Matheny added another responsibility to his duties as St. Louis Cardinals manager, which already included setting lineups and determining the pitching rotation.

“I’m the glove breaker-inner guy,” Matheny said.

Players say he has a knack for it. More…
