BOCA RATON – FAU used a seven-run fifth inning to erase an 8-1 Texas-San Antonio lead, and David Wilson’s sixth-inning solo homer gave the Owls the lead for good in a 10-8 victory over the Roadrunners on Friday,
“What an amazing game,” FAU coach John McCormack said. “I thought the guys never gave up.”
The Owls sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth, making the most of four hits. Two Owls walked and two others were hit by pitches in the frame.
UTSA nearly minimized the damage when, with one out and runners on first and second, Gunnar Lambert hit a one-hopper to third baseman Aldo Buendia, who immediately stepped on third for the force out. But Buendia’s throw to first in an attempt to double up Lambert for the final out of the inning skipped down the right field line.
Pedro Pages lumbered all the way home from first, cutting UTSA’s lead to 8-7. Following a pitching change, Eric Rivera drove a single through the left side of the infield that drove in Lambert, tying the score at 8.
Following Wilson’s homer, his seventh of the season, FAU added an insurance run in the eighth when Rivera led off the inning with a single, advanced to second when Diamond Johnson’s sacrifice attempt turned into a hit, moved to third on Wilson’s sacrifice and scored on Richie Nizza’s sacrifice fly.
“You can’t say enough about Cody Wilson, the home run, and Nizza, who it’s been a bit of a struggle all year,” McCormack said. “He gets a big sac fly and kind of takes the wind out of their sail a little bit.”

Moving Forward: Gunnar Lambert gave the Owls their first run with a homer to right field. …Eric Rivera tallied four of the Owls 11 hits on the night. …Cody Wilson raced into the left-center field ally to cut of Chase Hacker’s sixth-inning single before it could get to the wall, then fired to second to nail Hacker on his bid for a double. …FAU’s bullpen tossed four scoreless innings.
Sliding Backward: Starting pitcher Jake Miednik allowed all eight runs – seven of them earned. Most of the eight hits Miednik surrendered weren’t struck particularly well, but found holes in the infield or dropped barely out of the reach of converging infielders and outfielders. …Tyler Frank went hitless in four at-bats, but with a walk extended his on-base streak to 28 games. …Andru Summerall went hitless in three at-bats, striking out twice and grounding into a double play.
Key Stat: 1,403 – announced attendance for the game. Half of those ticket sales went to local little league teams.
Up Next: FAU and UTSA play the middle game of their weekend series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Instant Message: “Guys just kept believing. We got a few hits in the bottom of the fifth and (Kevin Abraham) goes, ‘We’re going to win this game coach, don’t worry.’” – McCormack
