BOCA RATON – Jake Miednik struck out the first seven batters he faced and totaled 14 in 7 1/3 innings, quieting Delaware’s bats in a 7-2 FAU victory.
The Blue Hens didn’t get their first hit until the top of the fifth inning and for the second consecutive Friday night an FAU opponent managed on two hits.
“That’s as good of pitching as we’ve had here in a single game performance in a long time,” FAU coach John McCormack said.
Unlike FAU’s first four games, the Owls’ supported their pitchers with plenty of offense..
David Miranda hit the first FAU home run of the season, bouncing it halfway up the right field light pole in the first inning.
The bats really got going in the bottom of the third, when Pedro Pages, Eric Rivera and Cody Wilson had consecutive RBI singles, extending the Owls’ lead to 4-0.
Delaware scored both of its runs off Miednik, but only one was earned.
FAU added two runs in the six before Cody Wilson’s home run in the bottom of the eighth inning completed the scoring.
Although the Owls hit the ball well, Coach McCormack was still upset with the effort his team put into this game.
“Thank god for him[Miednik] because we didn’t play particularly well,” McCormack said.
