BOCA RATON, Fla. — Florida Atlantic delivered a statement performance Thursday night, riding an explosive offensive attack and timely defensive plays to defeat American Conference contender UTSA, 60-29, at Flagler Credit Union Stadium.
The Owls entered the nationally televised matchup looking to rebound from a disappointing road loss to North Texas. Instead, FAU produced one of its most impressive offensive performances of the season against a Roadrunners team that arrived in Boca Raton with a 7-1 record and an undefeated mark in conference play.
Led by quarterback Caden Veltkamp, versatile playmaker Easton Messer and a punishing rushing attack, Florida Atlantic scored 21 points in the opening quarter, led 35-22 at halftime and extended its advantage to 50-29 late in the third quarter.
The victory improved FAU’s record to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in American Conference play, while handing UTSA its first conference loss of the season.
Messer Ignites an Explosive Opening Quarter
Florida Atlantic wasted little time establishing its offensive rhythm.
After special teams pinned UTSA deep in its territory, the Owls capitalized on favorable field position when Veltkamp found Messer for a six-yard touchdown pass.
UTSA responded with a 20-yard touchdown connection from Owen McCown to Mekhi Anderson, tying the game at 7-7.
But the Owls quickly reclaimed the momentum with one of their most creative plays of the season.
Veltkamp tossed a lateral to Messer, who turned quarterback and delivered a 14-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Johnson. The trick play restored FAU’s lead at 14-7.
Messer wasn’t finished.
Late in the first quarter, Veltkamp connected with him again for a 15-yard touchdown, giving Florida Atlantic a commanding 21-7 advantage.
Messer accounted for three first-quarter touchdowns, catching two and throwing another.
FAU Maintains Momentum Before Halftime
The Roadrunners continued to battle behind McCown and their explosive offense.
A’Marion Peterson broke loose for a 52-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, trimming FAU’s advantage to 21-13.
Florida Atlantic responded with an impressive six-play, 82-yard scoring drive, capped by Johnson’s four-yard touchdown run.
UTSA answered with a 45-yard touchdown pass from McCown to Anderson, but the Owls refused to surrender control.
Veltkamp connected with running back Leonard Farrow for an 18-yard touchdown reception, extending FAU’s lead to 35-19.
A 54-yard field goal by UTSA’s Michael Petro as the first half expired brought the Roadrunners within 35-22 heading into the locker room.
Owls Seize Control in the Third Quarter
Florida Atlantic’s defense delivered another critical momentum-changing play early in the second half.
After UTSA received the opening kickoff, the Owls forced a fumble that defensive back D. Batiste recovered deep in Roadrunners territory, setting up FAU’s offense with excellent field position.
The Owls capitalized, extending their advantage to 43-22 before UTSA responded with a 26-yard touchdown pass from McCown to Isaiah Butler-Tanner.
With UTSA attempting to rally, Florida Atlantic continued to move the football effectively.
FAU added another touchdown during the third quarter, building a 50-29 advantage.
By the closing seconds of the period, the Owls had accumulated 481 total yards, including 272 rushing yards, while averaging 8.4 yards per offensive play.
The balance between FAU’s rushing attack and Veltkamp’s passing game repeatedly placed UTSA’s defense in difficult situations.
A Statement for Florida Atlantic
The performance carried particular significance because of the opponent.
UTSA entered the matchup among the American Conference’s strongest teams, with an undefeated conference record and aspirations of competing for the league championship.
Florida Atlantic, meanwhile, was seeking consistency after surrendering 48 points in a narrow loss at North Texas the previous week.
Thursday’s offensive performance provided a reminder of the Owls’ ability to compete with the American Conference’s top programs.
The victory also gives Florida Atlantic momentum entering the final stretch of the regular season, with bowl eligibility and conference positioning firmly in focus.
FINAL: FLORIDA ATLANTIC 60, UTSA 29.
