BOCA RATON – Sharply contradicting multiple published reports, FAU coach Lane Kiffin says Tony Pecoraro remains the Owls’ defensive coordinator.
“Nothing has changed,” Kiffin wrote in a text message on Tuesday. “U can quote me.”
Reports hit the internet Monday night that Kiffin had decided to part ways with Pecoraro following the defensive coordinator’s first season with the Owls.
Kiffin assured that Pecoraro is in fact still with the Owls, remains FAU’s defensive coordinator, and is currently on the recruiting trail representing Florida Atlantic.
Pecoraro came to FAU from Southern Miss during the past offseason. In March he signed a three-year contract with FAU that pays $350,000 per year. Should Kiffin and the Owls elect to dismiss Pecoraro in the coming weeks, FAU would still him owe $350,000 for the coming year, provided Pecoraro doesn’t take another job. If Pecoraro elects to leave on his own for another coaching job, he would owe the university $350,000 per the agreed buyout.
Most, including Kiffin, expected the defense, which returned 10 starters, to be the strength of the Owls. The Owls, however, struggled to pressure opposing quarterbacks and to force turnovers. They currently rank No. 90 in total defense, allowing 427.4 yards per game and the 31.8 points they allowed ranks No. 94.
The defense performed significantly better during Conference USA play, giving the Owls a chance to win every C-USA game.
FAU, however, finished the season with a 5-7 record, failing to achieve bowl eligibility.
