BOCA RATON – Florida Atlantic football will open its 2020 regular season on a Thursday night in the Midwest and conclude it two days after Thanksgiving in the Volunteer State, Conference USA announced on Wednesday.

The kickoff of season No. 20 of FAU football moved up a couple of days. FAU will play at Minnesota on Thursday, Sept. 3, the date of the game likely indicating a move to accommodate a yet-to-be-announced national television broadcast.

FAU’s lone victory over a Power 5 opponent came against Minnesota in 2007. The Gophers defeated the Owls the other three times they’ve met.

The Owls home opener comes the following Saturday when FCS level Stony Brook travels to Howard Schnellenberger Field.

Following a trip to Georgia Southern, FAU concludes its non-conference schedule with arguably its most important game of the season, a Sept. 26 home tussle with South Florida. Newly-named FAU coach Willie Taggart coached the Bulls from 2013-16, and was on the sidelines when FAU defeated USF 28-10 in 2013.

FAU begins defense of its Conference USA championship at home against Charlotte on Oct. 3, then doesn’t have another home game until a Halloween contest against UTSA. Western Kentucky (Nov. 7) and Old Dominion (Nov. 21) round out the Owls’ home schedule.

The 2020 Shula Bowl will be played on Nov. 14 at FIU stadium in Miami this year.

Within C-USA play, the Owls also travel to Southern Miss (Oct. 10), Marshall (Oct. 24), with a Nov. 28 season-concluding date at Middle Tennessee.

Marshall handed FAU it’s lone C-USA loss last season.

The Owls’ only Saturday bye is Oct. 17.

FAU is coming off an 11-3 season that included its second Conference USA championship and second Boca Raton Bowl title in three years. Taggart replaced Lane Kiffin, who departed for Mississippi following the C-USA title victory.
