BOCA RATON – Chris Robison’s breakout second career start impressed Conference USA voters enough to name him their Offensive Player of the Week.

He’s joined in Monday’s honors by linebacker Rashad Smith, who recorded a career-high 16 tackles and an interception on Saturday to earn C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors.

A redshirt freshman, Robison threw for a program-record 471 yards, completing 33 of 40 passes in the Owls 33-27 victory over Air Force on Saturday.

Robison also threw for three touchdowns, two to Willie Wright and another to Jovon Durante.

“He rarely missed,” FAU coach Lane Kiffin said of the performance.

Robison won a three-way training camp battle to earn the start in the season-opener at Oklahoma.

He didn’t perform all that well against the Sooners, but did lead the Owls to their first touchdown of the year on his final possession. Rafe Peavey and De’Andre Johnson, the other two quarterback competitors, each piloted a drive in that game.

On Saturday, Robison was behind center from the opening kickoff to the final whistle.

One day later Kiffin said Robison had “earned” the right to start again on Saturday against Bethune-Cookman.

Robison’s big day moved him to the No. 12 spot nationally in passing yards with 628. In Conference USA, only North Texas quarterback Mason Fine has more.

Having completed 48 of his 66 passing attempts on the season, Robison’s .727 completion percentage ranks No. 14 nationally. That’s the top mark among C-USA quarterbacks.

Robison is the first Owl to earn Conference USA Player of the Week honors. Last season the Owls won the offensive award four times, with three going to Devin Singletary and the other going to Jason Driskel. Safety Jalen Young also nabbed a Defensive Player of the Week honor, and kick returner Kerrith Whyte earned one Special Teams Player of the Week award.

Conference USA media members vote on the weekly award.
