One night after posting eight runs over the final two two innings, FAU couldn’t complete a similar late rally, falling to FIU 8-5 in Miami.

Trailing 8-2, the first five FAU batters reached base to start the ninth inning, cutting the Panthers lead to 8-4.

David Miranda’s ground out to second plated Andru Summerall with the Owls’ fifth run of the game. The Owls, however, would draw no closer. Eric Rivera, then Gunnar Lambert struck out to end the ballgame.

Blake Sanderson drew the start for the Owls, who entered the weekend without three of their starting pitchers. Sanderson gave the Owls a chance to win, tossing 5 2/3 innings of three-run ball. Only two of those runs were earned.

The Owls trailed 3-2 entering the eight but surrendered five runs in the bottom of the frame.

Reliever Marc Stewart allowed the first three batters to reach, including a lead-off home run. Matt Harris replaced Stewart but only retired two of the four batters he faced. The other two batters would score.

Weston Clemente relieved Harris and allowed both runners he inherited to score before recording the final out of the inning.

FAU and FIU will play the rubber game of their weekend series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
