BOCA RATON – Florida Atlantic Saturday starter Kyle Marman’s elbow injury will likely require season-ending surgery, sources tell OwlAccess.com.

Marman had been the Owls’ most effective starter, striking out 46 while walking only four on his way to a 1.45 ERA. He teamed with Jake Miednik two form a formidable one-two punch at the top of the Owls’ weekend rotation.

FAU is expected to send Marman for a second opinion before making a final decision.

Mark Nowatnick took Marman’s place in the rotation on Saturday against No. 15 Southern Miss, surrendering four runs, two earned, in six innings of a 5-2 FAU loss.

Nowatnick worked his way into the weekend rotation last season before a foot injury prematurely ended his season. He is scheduled to make next Saturday’s start, too.

FAU barely missed out on its third-consecutive game containing ninth-inning magic.

Trailing by three, the Owls put two on with two out in the ninth for clean-up hitter Pedro Pages, whose bid for a game-tying blast was held up by a strong wind blowing in from left, allowing left fielder Fred Franklin to catch it at the wall.

On Wednesday FAU defeated Miami 11-9 by scoring six runs in the ninth, highlighted by a two-out grand slam from Eric Rivera. In Friday’s series opener FAU scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.

Saturday’s loss snaps FAU’s 13-game home winning streak to open the season.
