BOCA RATON – FAU’s second major recruiting weekend of 2018 is only a few hours old, and the Owls already have a commitment.

Arizona Western center Zack Bennett committed to the Owls on Friday night, becoming the ninth member of the FAU’s 2018 recruiting class.

“I just believe this program has a chance to be in the national spot light and I want to be a part of that with coach [Lane] Kiffin,” Bennett wrote in a text message to OwlAccess.com.

Prior to arriving at FAU, Bennett told OwlAccess.com that he planned on committing to the Owls if he enjoyed the experience.

“If I get down there and click with the coaching staff and can click with some of the players I’ll definitely be committing,” Bennett said.

Apparently it didn’t take Bennett long to click.

Center is a position of need for the Owls, who lost All-Conference USA center Antonyo Woods to graduation.

Injured much of the season, back-up center Richard Williams returned for the latter portion of the year, playing sparingly.

An Idaho native, Bennett committed to Washington St. out of high school but didn’t qualify academically.

He played two seasons at Arizona Western, leaving Bennett with two years of eligibility remaining, plus a redshirt season should he need one.

UCLA recently contacted Bennett, and he canceled a visit to Kansas with his eyes on FAU and caoch Lane Kiffin.

“I think FAU right now is putting me in the best position to go to the NFL,” Bennett said.

Bennett was the first of two players to announce their commitment to FAU on Friday night.

Palm Beach Lakes athlete Teja Young tweeted his commitment, too.

“I am 100% committed to Florida Atlantic University. I want to thank coach Kiffin for giving me this opportunity. I believe in the program he is building down in Boca. I will be spending my next 4-5 years balling in paradise,” Young wrote.

Young had committed to Colorado prior to visiting FAU last weekend. Immediately following that visit Young announced his de-commitment on Twitter, writing that a commitment was coming shortly.

Young told OwlAccess.com that he actually committed to FAU during his official visit but held off announcing the commitment until Friday.

“I feel as if it’s real and the coaches and players have a certain connection,” Young wrote of FAU in a text.

A quarterback and cornerback at Palm Beach Lakes, Young says defensive back will be his primary position. He’ll also return kicks and punts, and maybe even play some offense.

His commitment is No. 10 for FAU.
