Tax and Score

BOCA RATON – Tax day may also be the unofficial unveiling of the new Lane Kiffin-led FAU football team.

The Owls are tentatively planning to hold their spring football game on April 15, the day federal income taxes are generally due, sources tell OwlAccess.com.

That will likely be the first time FAU fans, and the general public, can see Kiffin’s Owls in action.

Kiffin may not formally set the spring practice schedule until after Feb. 1, National Signing Day.

Football teams are allowed 15 on-field practice sessions during the spring. Those 15 practices must take place over a time period no longer than 34 days. Should Kiffin elect to use the full allotment of days, that would put the start of spring practice in the first full week of March.

FAU’s 2017 spring practice will be the first under Kiffin. The Owls’ hired the former Alabama offensive coordinator in mid-December to replace Charlie Partridge, who led the Owls to three consecutive 3-9 seasons before being relieved of his duties.

Kiffin has previous head coaching experience at USC, Tennessee and with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders.

He will be a busy coach on Friday. The Owls host the second major recruiting weekend of his tenure, beginning today. He will also be a featured speaker at Friday evening’s ceremonial groundbreaking for the Schmidt Athletic Complex.
