BOCA RATON – Conference USA media members selected senior FAU linebacker Rashad Smith as the conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Smith is the first FAU player this season to win Player of the Week honors.

Smith forced a fumble and recovered two more fumbles, including one in the Owls’ end zone in FAU’s victory over Ball St. He recorded six tackles including the sack that caused the fumble.

This is Smith’s second time being named Player of the Week during his career. Smith has 24 tackles with two and a half tackles for a loss in three games. He joins the likes of D’Joun Smith along with former teammates Ocie Rose and Jalen Young to be named Player of the Week on Defense.

FAU nominated wide receiver John Mitchell for the Offensive Player of the Week award after he cause a career-high eight passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday. Mitchell fell short to Southern Mississippi wide receiver Quez Watkins, who had seven receptions for 209 yards and two scores in the Golden Eagles’ win over Troy.

C-USA only allows schools to nominate one player from each side of the ball for its weekly awards. FAU chose Mitchell over quarterback Chris Robison, who completed 33-of-41 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns. All of those numbers are season highs for Robison, including a career high in touchdowns in a single game.

FAU vs. WAGNER
Six teams C-USA teams beat non-conference opponents during Week 3. FAU will be one of seven C-USA teams to face an out-of-conference foe this week, with the Owls will be facing FCS-level Wagner. The last time FAU faced Wagner, FAU needed a Graham Wilbert to Byron Hankerson connection to survive the 7-3 win at FAU Stadium.

The Seahawks, 4-7 last season in the Northeast Conference, allowed nearly 400 yards a game including 545 to Stony Brook University. Sophomore running back Dymirti McKenzie rushed for 115 yards and two scores, including a 55 yard touchdown, against UConn. On defense senior DB Myron Morris, a Preseason All-NEC selection, has two interceptions, returning one for a score against UConn.

UPCOMING C-USA GAME OF THE WEEK
FIU (1-2) will face Louisiana Tech (2-1) in Ruston, La on Saturday night. FIU lost both games to start the season, including a loss to Western Kentucky two weeks ago. La Tech returning starters include senior running back Jaqwis Dancy, who ran for 116 yards in a 21-13 defeat of FAU last year.
