Choosing Sides

BOCA RATON – FAU players will be hungry for more than bragging rights and spots on the depth chart during Saturday’s spring game.

A steak dinner will be on the line, too.

“The winners eat steak and the losers eat hot dogs and beans,” coach Lane Kiffin said.

FAU will split into two teams, red and white.

The first team offense and second team defense will be one team, with second team offense and first team defense on the other side. Members of the third and fourth teams will be scattered throughout both squads.

Players on FAU’s leadership side drafted coaches for their teams, With offensive coordinator Charlie Weis serving as the head coach on one team and running backs coach Kevin Smith the coach of the other.

Kiffin won’t coach either team, electing to remain neutral, ensuring he’ll be among the group eating steak at a team luncheon on Monday.

De’Andre Johnson will quarterback the first team offense, with Chris Robison piloting the second team.

FAU will tackle during the first half but not the second. Running back Devin Singletary will not participate in the first half but may still be cleared to play in the second half, when the Owls aren’t tackling. He’s been nursing a hamstring injury.
