FAU juniors Alvarez, Newton sign pro contracts

Both of the FAU juniors selected in this week's MLB Draft have signed professional contracts.

The photo shows third-round choice R. J. Alvarez signing his deal with the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels told Alvarez he will skip rookie league and short season. He will be reporting to Class A Cedar Rapids of the Midwest League on Monday.

FAU third baseman Kyle Newton signed with the Rockies, who selected him in the 19th round.

“I thought I was ready to make that step in the next direction for sure,” Newton said. “It's amazing. It's a lifelong dream. It's great for me and my family and all the coaches who helped me get here.”

Newton will report to Grand Junction in the short season Pioneer League.

Congratulations to both players.
