FAU expected to approve hike in student athletic fee today
By Marcus Nelson
The FAU Board of Trustees is expected to approve an increase in the student athletic fee today that will see the amount of students pay increase to $17.27 per credit hour.
Based on last year’s information, that figure would mean FAU students would be paying the secod-highest rate in the state behind West Florida, which has a student athletic fee of $17.49 per credit hour.
FIU recently voted to increase its athletic fee from $15.56 to $16.10 per credit hour. FIU students also play a $10 flat fee in addition as part of their student athletic fees.
FAU is asking to increase the fee to offset student fees which are already pledged to the funding of the stadium.
The athletic department is also expecting its costs to rise in other areas including cost for athletes to attend summer school, tuition and travel expenses.
But the biggest increase, according to the proposal, is salaries for coaches payable to the new coaches for football and women’s basketball. The department expects almost half of the $1.7 million in increased expenses to be in salaries and benefits.
This means the students will be supporting the department even more. I hope the student body gets the respect it deserves with their "donation" instead of meeting resistence by the department on things like helping traditions get started or getting extra tickets for football games.
After all, the students are (and have been) the biggest "donors." It's time they were treated that way.
