How to celebrate? For Morris, it's bowling
Hey, Alfred Morris. You were just selected by the Washington Redskins in the NFL Draft.
How are you going to celebrate?
“I'm going bowling with my friends,” Morris said Saturday evening. “Regardless of what happened we were going bowling.”
Redskins fans, rejoice. This is the kind of guy you're getting. He's down to earth and seemingly always in a good mood. He's good natured and always smiling. Everybody likes Fred – until it's time to tackle him.
Never short on youthful exuberance (he was the last of the adults taking part in the snowball fight with kids when the Owls brought in a truckload of snow as part of a basketball game promotion two seasons ago), Morris was almost giddy after learning he was a Redskin. The laid back running back talked so fast you'd have thought he already landed a sponsorship with Red Bull.
Morris would have been happy to play anywhere for anyone, but he's been a Redskins fan ever since they traded for Clinton Portis in 2004.
“It worked out kind of crazy,” he said. “This definitely makes it even better that this is one of my (favorite teams).”
FAU fans have to feel good for Morris. He literally (yes, literally) carried the Owls' offense last year. His four touchdown performance against UAB in the Owls' lone victory last season won't soon be forgotten by anyone who saw it – which regrettably was only about a couple hundred people.
I located a couple old videos we produced during Morris' breakthrough sophomore season. The top one features Howard Schnellenberger comparing Morris to Larry Csonka. The bottom one appeared as part of The Howard Schnellenberger Show in 2009 and features former Redskins offensive backfield coach Fred O'Connor comparing Morris to John Riggins.
Avoid the rush and get to know him now, Washington fans. He should fit perfectly into Mike Shanahan's running schemes.
You'll soon understand what FAU fans have known for years: Alfred Morris is worth your emotional investment.
