Thursday's Daily Briefing: FAU's Groody among top punters in nation

FAU fans, admit it. When perusing the college football magazines for information about FAU, you probably start at the bottom and work your way up. Heck, in some cases, you can start at the bottom and stay there. Yes, that’s right, the venerable staff at Athlon’s had deemed FAU No. 120, - dead last in the national rankings. I would love to ask the writer about the prediction, but since I’ve never seen a writer from Athlon’s on campus, it will likely be a lengthy wait.

But I digress.

There is perhaps some good news in the magazines this summer and it comes from one of the few sources who actually does his homework – Phil Steele. Steele’s magazine, available at newsstands, has FAU ranked in the top 25 in one important, but overlooked category. Owls punter Mickey Groody is ranked as the 16th best punter in the nation.

That’s a pretty good honor for Groody, the first specialist to earn a scholarship at FAU. Groody has steadily improved since arriving on campus and is poised to have a breakout season. Let’s hope the average is high, but the attempts are low for one of the nicest guys on the team.
