Monday's Daily Briefing: FAU one game away from Sun Belt title

Thanks to an unexpected result on Sunday, Florida Atlantic’s road to winning the Sun Belt Conference regular season title can be summed up simply.

If the Owls win, they are in – at least in the NIT should they lose in the Sun Belt Tournament.

South Alabama became the first Sun Belt Conference team to win in Denver in 16 games dating back to last season to clear up the picture and put FAU’s magic number at one. That means any combination of FAU wins or loss by Denver and ULL  will eliminate that team and give the Owls the title. Arkansas State could still tie FAU if the Owls lose the next two games and share a co-championship, but FAU would win the tie-breaker and the NIT automatic bid over the Red Wolves.
FAU would like nothing better than to beat Troy on Thursday in the last home game of the season to celebrate the championship with a game left to play. Should they lose, the Owls will have to watch the scoreboard on Thursday and Saturday before facing South Alabama on Sunday.
A new mascot will be named that night at The Burrow, and possibly a new Sun Belt Conference champion as well.
