BOCA RATON – FAU defensive tackle Andy Czuprynski was on track to start the Owls’ first game of the season until an ankle injury in the first scrimmage of the pre-season put those plans on hold.
It may have taken a while but Czuprynski, a redshirt freshman, has finally cracked the lineup and started for the first time in Saturday’s 35-18 victory vs. Arkansas State.
“I played about 50 snaps and I think I did pretty good,” said Czuprynski. “It felt natural. “
Czuprynski earned the spot over Dino Cox, who leads the team in sacks with three, but has seen his level of play drop off in the last few weeks due to a neck injury.
FAU defensive coordinator Kirk Hoza likes what he’s seen from Czuprynski so far, including his game vs. the Red Wolves.
“He’s a big framed kid, he’s a bright kid and physical kid,” said FAU defensive coordinator Kirk Hoza. “He’s tough and I’m really excited about Andy.”
Czuprynski is fully recovered from his ankle sprain in August.
“I felt close to 100 percent for my first start,” Czuprynski said.
Harmon wins national weekly award: FAU tight end Jason Harmon was named John Mackey Award Tight End of the Week for his performance vs. the Red Wolves, when he caught four passes for 82 yards and caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Van Camp.
In coaches meetings this week, tight ends coach Joe Corozza told FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger that Harmon played the best game of his career.
Harmon said he thinks it might have been one of his best performances.
“I think that’s probably true,” said Harmon. “I made all my blocks and I was really feeling confident.”

Making plays: Wide receiver Chris Bonner had some nice catches for touchdowns. His chemistry with Jeff Van Camp appears to be getting better.
Stepping up: With cornerback Curtis Cross missing practices so far this week, redshirt sophomore Darian Thomas has been running with the starters.
