When Florida Atlantic senior tight end Jamari Grant re-injured his ankle in the first quarter of Saturday’s 27-25 loss to the Warhawks, Jason Harmon immediately became an integral part of the gameplan.
Harmon responded by catching a career-high 11 passes for 132 yards. The Owls may need another strong performance from Harmon this week. FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger said Sunday that Grant will miss this week – and possibly longer – with an ankle injury that he believes may be serious.
“He’s in a cast and will be in a cast until the middle of next week,” Schnellenberger said Sunday. “Then they’ll take it off and see how severe it is. But it’s one of those things that has kept some of our players out for quite a while.”
Grant was a preseason All-Sun Belt selection this season and had six catches for 46 yards this season before hurting his ankle vs. South Carolina.
In the first game of the season vs. Nebraska, Grant's five catches tied Cortez Gent for the team lead. Gent has since been suspended indefinitely from the team for conduct detrimental to the team.
In addition to Harmon, Schnellenberger said he was pleased with the way tight end Darian Williams played vs. ULM.
Williams scored his first career touchdown on a 5-yard pass from Rusty Smith late in the fourth quarter.
“I think he’s going to be a very adequate backup to Harmon,” Schnellenberger said.
Tidy Bowl Men: Three players who stood out in Sunday's Toilet Bowl
Three Flushes: Running back Avionne Rolle was effective running inside and out. His 40-yard touchdown run around right end on the first series got the offense off to a good start.
Two Flushes: Redshirt freshman defensive end Brandon Hando heard words of praise much of the afternoon, most notably following a sack of David Kooi.
One flush: Cornerback
Keith Reaser delivered the biggest hit of the bowl, staying at home on a reverse to smack Grant Glover.
